Amarok 1.4.2

August 31, 2006 » Geek

I just updated my install of Amarok, which is possibly the greatest music player / jukebox ever. I’d heard alot about the new version, most of it being about the new native capability to play last.fm radio streams without any hacks.

I have to say, I like the new version, it’s gotten a bit of a facelift and somethings have changed. I like the fact that your collection has alphabetic dividers, it makes it easier to find artists.

The site claims that it has added support for MTP devices, but I haven’t hooked my precious Zen MicroPhoto up to it yet. Anyway, just putting up a post recommending the new Amarok.

Javascript Rating Meter

Update: A newer version is outlined in this post.

Due to a discussion I had earlier today, I was thinking about how to make one of those little star meters where you can click to set the rating and they change colors. I took some time to code up this quick version.

I didn’t want to use image swapping, because that wouldn’t be as flexible. So instead, you change the background color and have a transparent cutout of the image you want over that. It’ll make more sense once I get an example made.

For now, here’s my prototype. It needs a lot of work to make it into a good script, but it’s a start. Example Here

Last.fm Web Services

August 29, 2006 » Geek

Huzzah! I was looking around the audioscrobbler.net web services and found my holy grail!

I’ve tried a bunch of ways to retrieve a cover for the most recent track.  I’ve never been able to figure out Amazon’s image naming system, though I found neat hacks at this cool site: http://aaugh.com/imageabuse.html that absorbed way too much time.  I’ve also tried retrieving Google results and regex’ing the whole file, which was slow and rarely worked.

Well, today I found the artist info XML at audioscrobbler. Example
I’m going to incorporate this bad boy into my last.fm scripts and put the system up here on the homepage.  Maybe I’ll try my hand at a WP plugin, just for the heck of it.

More WordPress Stuff

August 28, 2006 » Geek

So I’ve gotten all the posts over from the old system. I’ve had alot of trobule with getting iG:Syntax Hiliter to behave, though it’s mostly my own fault for not understanding the options and the styling. The “plain text” links still weren’t working, so I took them off.

I’ve been finding little flaws in the theme here and there, and just today created a home.php to override the index and give this nice custom job, more like the old page. I also had problems getting scrobbler to work. I finally realized it wasn’t scrobbler that was messed up, it was wp-cache making the dynamic last.fm content into cached copies.

I figured that out after pulling scrobbler and inserting my own last.fm code straight into the template. Not the best solution, but I never intend on releasing this template as public anyway.

Still chugging away at the static site, should have some of my content back soon.

Hello world!

August 27, 2006 » Geek

Well, I’ve gotten the new wordpress up, and finished up (I hope) my theme here. Hopefully there aren’t any little glitches in it, I’m bad at testing code out. Now I’ll start porting in all the content from the old site, which I’ve moved to static.velvetcache.org.

Don’t bother going there though, I hardcoded too much of the Smarty engine into it and so everything is broken since it’s moved to a new domain. Yet another thing to grep and fix :) Oh well, I really like wordpress, so it’s worth it.

Also, maybe it’s just me but I’m having issues with loading some pages, I think wp-cache is buggy, something else to figure out. If something doesn’t load, just try a few refreshes, sorry.

Update: Found the offending line of code, wp-cache should work nicely now :)
